- Are Businesses Ditching Their Blogs for Facebook and Twitter?
A study from the Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth shows businesses saying, "it's not you, it's me" to blogging during its peak of effectiveness There are no sweeter words right now in the publishing industry, than the report that 26% of all those non-publisher Inc. 500 companies trying to weasel their way into our content space have decided to abandon ship (writing blog posts) and take the easy road (writing tweets).
- How to Put Out Fires When Customers Light Them
"A brand is no longer what we tell the consumer it is – it is what consumers tell each other it is.” That's a line from Scott Cook, founder of Intuit. And indeed, word of mouth is a precious gem that unfortunately, we have no control over. Just like someone might tell a friend that a nearby restaurant is "just awful", they can tell someone that your publication is "pure crap". They can make up a rumor saying that you consistently rip off content from other bloggers, or you donate funds to an offshore company that steals money from the poor. People really have the ability to form opinions and say whatever they want to their friends, which you have no control over.
- Bringing a Good Thing Back With Duplicate Post Plugin
In the good old days, you were able to duplicate posts in WordPress. It was built right into the CMS and made writing new landing pages and templated posts a breeze. It also helped new editors learn our styles and page structures more quickly. It really was grand. For some reason, this functionality went away. Thankfully, I've stumbled upon a new plugin that brings this functionality back and makes it even better. The plugin is aptly called Duplicate Post and it lets you do just that—duplicate a post or page. You can even create a new draft of a post. With one click of the button you're back in post editor ready to write.
- SIPA Member Profile: Warren Keeps Family Business Humming
Dan Warren, President and Editor, Warren Communications News Inc., Washington, D.C. SIPA: What was your first job out of college? DAN: For two years I was a high school English teacher. Has there been a defining moment in your career? Perhaps when you knew you were on the right road. I was 29 and had finally completed my Ph.D. in English literature when two things happened: I got a taste of the grind of the real academic world while teaching at Catholic University, and I got a call from my father to help out with the launch of Warren’s risky and exciting startup, Communications Daily. I soon knew which world I wanted to be part of.
- Digital Magazine Publishing for Everyone
Independent publishers have been struggling for more than a decade to monetize blogs, portals, and communities; digital books and magazines are changing their Internet business models from sponsor to user driven. At our recent Digital Content Marketing Bootcamp in New York City, Kim and I were happily surprised at the number of entrepreneurs in attendance. More than half the class was startups in prelaunch mode. Traditionally, 80 percent of our attendees hail from legacy publishers who are making the conversion to digital. While the sample is small, I believe it is indicative of a larger trend.
- Entrepreneurs Turn to Content Management Systems
Are you looking to quit your job and start a new online business? Content management systems saved the lives of content publishers. OK, maybe not literally, but content management systems help greatly. They allow major customization, often within communities of designers and developers who continuously create plug-ins to make the systems even better. WordPress, for instance, thrives on a major support group of users and developers, who have helped transfer the content management system into a favorite of digital content publishers.
- Tracking the Health of Digital Content Products
Using plug-ins to help increase data tracking Envision this scenario: You recently turned evergreen content into digital products; some are purely text-based and a few are special editions that include brief videos related to the content. In creating these products you decided to build about the marketing efforts so you work on building keyword clusters even larger.

- Charlie Rose, Tom Cruise and the Merits of Community
Community Involvement Can Work on Many Levels There seems to be something rather businessy to the “getting involved in your community” idea taking shape right now. Last night on Charlie Rose, political commentator David Brooks spoke about the professional advantages of working to make your community a better one. It’s interesting that in this global age—where a SIPA member in Ohio can just as easily sell to someone in Germany as Indiana—that establishing yourself in your community would still be a big plus. But it can.
